FOUR years after being formed by just one Aberystwyth woman on a Facebook page, a hugely successful coastal environment campaign group has announced it will evolve into a proper association.
The Cambrian News reported “Aberystwyth Beach Buddies was formed in 2014 by Sian Obermaier to help Aberystwyth’s beaches and coastline stay clean and raise awareness of the devastating impact marine plastic pollution has world wide.
Since its formation the group, whose activities are regularly covered in the Cambrian News, has hosted and supported hundreds of beach cleans, removed tonnes and tonnes of plastic and gained the support online of thousands of people and on the beaches with hundreds of amazing volunteers.
Now the group – which has won awards for its work – say it’s “time to evolve”.
It will be holding a public meeting at the Penparcau Community Forum on Wednesday, 6 June, from 7pm to 9pm and are urging as many people as possible to attend.
The group will become an unincorporated association, will have a management committee and a constitution and will be looking for people to become more involved and volunteer some of their time to different roles within the group, from treasurers, chairs, secretaries, lead volunteers to campaign co-ordinators.
The Beach Buddies said: “As a small collective of very determine volunteers we have come as far as we can, we’ve spent thousands of hours and pounds doing as much as we could spare, by changing, we know we’ll be able to do more to clean our little piece of earth, reach more people and plastic and be more able to run campaigns and offer more services in and around Aberystwyth” here.
