FEARS have been expressed over the future of two high street clothes chain stores in Aberystwyth.
The Cambrian News reported “Estate agent Cooke and Arkwright is marketing for rent the Great Darkgate Street premises that houses Dorothy Perkins and Burton.
And the owners of Siop Iago, who have a store in Newcastle Emlyn and opened a second store in Aberystwyth in 2016, also appear to be closing the shop in Great Darkgate Street.
The news comes after a string of national retailers closed stores in Aberystwyth. The owners of both Thorntons and Claire’s Accessories made the decision in the last year to close their stores in the town.
The owners of the Dorothy Perkins, Burton and Iago stores have yet to respond to a request for commented.
But Aberystwyth councillor Ceredig Davies said the loss of businesses in Aberystwyth town centre was a concern and warned that high rents and business rates were causing problems for high street stores.
He said: “Whilst much has been said about our outdated business rating system there is now evidence that the time has come when property landlords, many of whom are pension companies, need to realise that renting out shops is no longer a cash cow that they can milk and milk again.
“It will take time for the market to readjust, but until then there will be many an empty shop in our towns.
“If we want to see shops remain in Aberystwyth we need to support them. Use them or lose them” here.
