HARBOURSIDE residents in Aberystwyth have been left “astonished” after plans were unveiled to build a six-storey block of flats on parking spaces next to their homes.
The Cambrian News reported “People living at Y Lanfa have been told that planning permission will be sought by Aberystwyth-based Ellis Developments Company Wales Ltd for a block of 10 two-bedroom flats.
The development, if approved, will be built on overgrown scrubland on the grounds of the original development and a section of car parking spaces that flat-owners purchased on a 999-year lease – leaving residents baffled by the announcement of the scheme.
Cecilia Crighton, who lives in Y Lanfa flats and whose parking space is one of those that could be lost, said: “Residents have been astonished to find that the proposal involves building a block of flats on the car park spaces which the residents in fact own on 999-year leases.
“A few replacement spaces are on offer but not enough.”
Cecilia told the Cambrian News that, while alternative spaces have been offered, there is not enough to replace those lost.
The plans will see parking spaces grow by six from nine to 15, but with eight of the spaces being underneath the new block of flats in car ports.
Cecilia said that there had been a lack of consultation over the plans, only a letter through the door explaining the plan, and said that parking would become an issue if it goes ahead” here.
