Five men are to stand trial accused of a vicious street attack which put a student in a coma.
The Cambrian News reported “Criminology student Ifan Richards Owens was left fighting for his life following an incident in Aberystwyth in the early hours of Sunday, January 14.
Today Billy Michael Valentine, aged 19, of Terrace Road, Aberystwyth, Andrew Raymond John Scott, aged 23, of Dolwyre, Llangwyryfon, Lee Andersen-Warnes, aged 20, of Min y Dref, Newcastle Emlyn, Michael Jones, aged 24, of Llanfair Clydogau, and 25-year-old David Robert Lloyd, of no fixed abode, all pleaded not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and to violent disorder when they appeared in the dock together at Swansea Crown Court .
Valentine pleaded guilty on a basis to an alternative charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm, but Jim Davies for the prosecution said that plea was not acceptable and asked the matter be set down for trial.
A trial date was set for August 6, and the five defendants were remanded into custody until that date.
None of the accused had representation for the hearing due to on-going action by barristers who are refusing to accept new cases in protest at financial cuts to the criminal justice system.
Nineteen-year-old student Mr Owens, from Cardiff , was discovered unconscious in High Street, Aberystwyth, in the early hours of January 14 and rushed to hospital.
He woke up from the coma on February 11″ here.
