Cambrian News photographer - The Old Welsh School in Aberystwyth is now fenced off as work gets underway on redevelopment of the site

A MAJOR Aberystwyth town centre development that will see the Old Welsh School converted into restaurants and cafés could be completed by March next year, developers have said.

Cambrian News reported “Work started on the ‘café quarter’ development on 11 June and developer Evannance Investment says it is hopeful the project will be completed by February or March next year.

The site is currently fenced off while work takes place on the development, with contracts agreed with national chains Pizza Express and Loungers to occupy units.

Ifan Evans, of Evannance, said the conversion work will see the building converted into four restaurant units and two café, coffee or ice cream units.

Both the main contractor and architects on the scheme are Welsh companies, with Mr Evans saying Evannance, which has been involved in renovation and development schemes in Tregaron and Aberystwyth, was pleased to be able to use Welsh contractors.

He said: “We are really pleased to have put together an entirely Welsh team for this multi-million-pound project.

“This will be an exciting landmark development which will contribute to the regeneration of Aberystwyth town and centre and strengthen the regional leisure offer, for residents and for visitors.

“Given Brexit and retail challenges, it is a vote of confidence in Aberystwyth and north Ceredigion” here.
