AN ABERYSTWYTH nightclub has raised £500 for an Aberystwyth student who was attacked in the street, by charging 10p for straws.
The Cambrian News reported “Why Not at the top of Great Darkgate Street has been raising money for Ifan Owens and his family for the last two weeks.
Ifan was found unconscious on High Street in the early hours of 14 January, but in February awoke from a coma and is now breathing unassisted.
With a separate fundraising drive reaching more than £6,500 already, the club decided to hold its own fundraising effort for the 19-year-old.
“We are delighted to announce that with a tremendous show of support from all our customers and staff at Why Not, we have raised £500 for Ifan Owens from donations and from sales of straws,” the nightclub said in a social media statement.
“We would like to thank all of you who has donated in the last two weeks.
“It’s been amazing to see everyone come together.”
Why Not will continue to charge 10p for straws in drinks after the success of the fundraising drive, with money going to the Marine Conservation Society.
“With the success of not only raising money for a good cause but also cutting down on our plastics usage through unnecessary straws, we have decided to keep the 10p straw charge,” the club added.
All the club’s straws are now also biodegradable.
The club joins other Aberystwyth pubs Wetherspoons and Scholars that have joined the fight against plastic straws by not offering them automatically with drinks in order to cut down on plastic waste” here.
