A POPULAR bar and social club at Aberystwyth University is set to become the latest casualty of an institution-wide cost-cutting exercise.
The Cambrian News reported “Brynamlwg, which has served the university community as a bar and headquarters for sports and social clubs since the 1970s, is set to shut as part of an £11.4m savings exercise which has already seen staff numbers at all university departments set to be reduced, along with support staff.
Under the plan there would be no job losses, the university insists, with staff “redeployed to the university’s other catering outlets”.
The university said it is currently “discussing alternative options for the management of Brynamlwg with members of the Aberystwyth University Sports and Social Club (AUSSC) committee”, but if talks are unsuccessful, Brynamlwg would close.
The building was refurbished just two years ago and relaunched to much fanfare, but the university said that “leisure patterns are changing and there has been a decline in demand in recent years”.
“The club is making a loss and, after careful consideration, the Commercial Services department has put forward a proposal to bring the university’s management of Brynamlwg to a close as part of the institution’s wider Sustainability Implementation Plan,” an Aberystwyth University spokesperson told the Cambrian News.
Aberystwyth University’s ongoing Sustainability Implementation Plan aims to save £11.4m over the next two years amid dwindling funding and tumbling student intake” here.
