THREE south Ceredigion councillors want to block the planned return of the Tour Series cycling event to Aberystwyth, saying it will not benefit the rest of the county.
The Cambrian News reported “While the council’s Cabinet narrowly backed the council underwriting the £65,000 cost of hosting the event, there was opposition amongst some Cabinet members and other councillors who insisted the authority should not be providing funding for the event.
That has now prompted three councillors – Euros Davies, who represents Llanwenog, Llandysul councillor Keith Evans and Beulah councillor Lyndon Lloyd – to call in the Cabinet decision.
Council chiefs had hoped that Advancing Aberystwyth, the company formed as part of the Aberystwyth Business Improvement District scheme, would take over running the tour series, but the company rejected that, saying it didn’t think it would benefit businesses by the company not having complete control over the event and its advertising and branding.
However, at that meeting Cllr Davies hit out saying that the council should not be agreeing to underwrite the cost at a time when jobs are being cut in the authority and in schools across the county and insisting that the event would not benefit rural areas in Ceredigion.
That prompted the call-in of the decision, with the three councillors saying that the council should not be stepping in to underwrite the event if other groups in Aberystwyth are not prepared to do so themselves.
While the council will seek sponsors to cover the cost, with Advancing Aberystwyth saying that the company would be interested in offering sponsorship, the call-in says the responsibility for funding the tour series should come from Aberystwyth organisations” here.
