AN Aberystwyth author has dived into Welsh football history to produce an insight into Welsh international players over the last 60 years.

The Cambrian News reported “Gwynfor Jones has written Y Crysau Cochion – Chwaraewyr Pêl-droed Cymru 1946-2016 which outlines every player that has represented the Welsh national side since 1946.

While the timing of the book’s release fits in perfectly with the fantastic showing of the Welsh team in last summer’s European Championships, Gwynfor said he had started work on the book well before Gareth Bale and his teammates thrilled the nation.

The book provides information and stories about each of the 331 players who have appeared in the 460 matches since 1946 with Gwynfor saying he thought the time was right for the book as it was 25 years since the Who’s Who of Welsh International Players was published.

Gwynfor said: “I noticed that it is 25 years since the publication of the Who’s Who of Welsh International Players which covered the years from 1876 to 1991. My book covers the period from 1946, when football restarted after the Second World War, to the glorious summer of 2016, and includes information about the 331 players who have represented us in 460 matches during that period.

“It is not a matter of jumping on the Euros bandwagon, because I started writing early in 2015, after getting the go-ahead from Y Lolfa.

“I thought it was high time we had a new book in order to keep the memory alive of the players who have enriched our national game and contributed to laying the foundations for our success at Euro 2016” here.
