ABERYSTWYTH Town FC have continued to shape their squad for the new Welsh Premier League season, with the addition of two new players to the squad.
Cambrian News reported “Left winger Alec Williams has joined the Park Avenue club from Prestatyn Town, along with forward Paulo Mendes, who had a spell with National League North side Darlington last season.
Left-sided midfielder Williams played four times against Aberystwyth last season, having spent six seasons with Prestatyn, after spells at Rhyl and Denbigh.
“He’s another experienced Welsh Premier League player to join the squad,” confirmed a club statement.
“He has made 46 appearances in the league, and brings additional pace an energy to the team. He is also known for his versatility, after making appearances at left back, in left midfield and in the central midfield for Prestatyn last season.
“Alec’s wonder strike against Connah’s Quay Nomads last season was nominated for November’s Welsh Premier Goal of the Month competition.”
Portuguese-born Mendes has experience of playing in the Welsh pyramid at Airbus Broughton, and is a versatile midfielder who can also play as a striker.
Mendes spent time playing for Estrela de Amadora and Oeiras as a youngster in his native country of Portugal, before moving to the UK. He has also had spells playing for Vauxhall Motors, Nantwich Town, Colwyn Bay, Oxford City and most recently with Darlington.
“Aberystwyth Town Football Club is excited to announce the signing of attacking forward Paulo Mendes,” confirmed a club statement.
“He had a spell with Darlington last season, and has previous experience of playing in the Welsh system.
“Everyone at the club wishes both Paulo and Alec a warm welcome to Park Avenue, and the supporters will get a chance to see them in action in our first pre-season friendly at home to Halesowen on Saturday.”
The Seasiders have also confirmed that local trio Mathew Jones, Geoff Kellaway and Jack Rimmer have all re-signed for next season.
Jones, who was one of the standout players last season in the left back position, is the first Aber player to be enrolled on the club’s new scholarship agreement with Aberystwyth University.
Aber have already signed wing-back Wes Baynes, from Llandudno, and Steff Edwards, from Airbus UK Broughton, and last season’s keeper Chris Mullock and top scorer Declan Walker have also completed forms.
The Seasiders play their first pre-season friendly match at home to Evo Stick Southern League side Halesowen on Saturday (2.30pm).
The fixture will be followed a home pre-season friendly against National League North outfit AFC Telford on Friday, 27 July at 8pm, before trips to Haverfordwest County on Saturday, 28 July and Neston on 4 August” here.
